Summer Elementary Japanese is designed to introduce the basic Japanese grammar, vocabulary, and cultural concepts that are essential for oral communication, listening, writing, and preparing to read for research purposes. The course will meet for 3-4 hours in the mornings, and students are expected to spend several hours preparing for class in the afternoons and evenings. It is strongly recommended that students learn the Japanese writing system - particularly hiragana - prior to the start of the course. The curriculum for Summer Elementary Japanese is the equivalent of the 101-102-103 sequence during the regular academic year.
This course provides 140 contact hours and participants may be eligible to receive a FLAS grant from their home institution or from UChicago to support their study. The SLI accepts the FLAS award as full tuition for summer Japanese.
